It is family-friendly, fun and educational for kids of all ages and a great picture opportunity for the family.  The cost is $5 per person with a maximum of $20 per family. All proceeds to benefit the Cobb County Safety Village.

Central Library rededicated in honor of longest-serving trustee

The Cobb County Board of Commissioners and the Library Board of Trustees held the official dedication of the Charles D. Switzer Public Library, formerly the Central Library.

The Smyrna resident served on the library system's Board of Trustees for 30 years, overseeing projects such as the digitization of the library's catalog, the construction of many libraries, and the expansion of services to improve the quality of life for the citizens of Cobb County. The library is located at 266 Roswell Street in downtown Marietta, just east of the Marietta Square.



Upcoming town hall meeting

I will host a town hall 7-8:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 15, at the Mountain View Community Center, 3400 Sandy Plains Road, Marietta. The meeting will focus on the Mt. Bethel (SLUP-11) zoning hearing scheduled to occur in November. The attorneys for the Mt Bethel School will be the town hall spotlight, will give a presentation and answer questions at the meeting. Included in the agenda that evening will be Department of Transportation updates and announcements and a presentation from the tax assessor. The town hall is open to the public.

Mt. Bethel School zoning request

The Mt. Bethel School has filed an application to rezone the property on Post Oak Tritt at the Blumenthal Jewish Center. The zoning case is scheduled to be heard Tuesday, Nov. 5 by Planning Commission and Tuesday, Nov. 19 by Board of Commissioners.  Both meetings start at 9 a.m. and will be held at 100 Cherokee Street in the Board of Commissioners meeting room. Ethics Board Notice of Election

Cobb County Board of Ethics Representative of Homeowners Association
Commission Districts 1 and 4 and Commission Districts 2 and 3

Notice is hereby given that an election for two board members on the Cobb County Board of Ethics will be conducted to fill four year terms for vacancies beginning December 11, 2013. One Board member will be elected from homeowners’ associations in Cobb County Commission Districts 1 and 4, and another elected from homeowners’ associations in Cobb County Commission Districts 2 and 3. In order to participate in the election, a homeowners’ association must be a legally constituted homeowners’ association representing no fewer than 25 residential parcels or housing units, or an umbrella organization comprised of at least five member homeowners’ associations.

The election will be held at 5:45 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 15 in the Board of Commissioners hearing room located at 100 Cherokee Street, Marietta, Georgia. Each duly qualified homeowners’ association shall be authorized to appear at the election to nominate and vote for the appropriate representative to the Board of Ethics. Each homeowners’ association shall have one vote and each board member shall be selected by a majority of the votes of the qualified homeowners’ associations present and voting.

Monthly zoning info available online
Every month the Cobb County Zoning Division prepares information, which provides analysis and staff recommendations for all rezoning, special land use permit and land use permit requests. These items are presented to the Planning Commission (PC) and Board of Commissioners (BOC) for their review, recommendation and consideration.

The Planning Commission hears the cases and provides recommended actions to the BOC. The PC heard October zoning cases on Tuesday, Oct. 1 and the BOC will hear cases on Tuesday, Oct. 15. Both meetings will begin at 9 a.m. at the Board of Commissioners building at 100 Cherokee Street, 2nd floor meeting room, Marietta 30090.

Cobb Community Garden Council announces first meeting

The first meeting of the newly formed Cobb Community Garden Council will be held 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 22 at the Cobb County Extension Service office, 678 South Cobb Drive, Suite 200, Marietta, 30060.

The council is a joint effort of the Master Gardener Volunteers of Cobb County and the Cobb County Extension Service. Take home your new furever friend at Cobb’s next Animal Control Adopt-a-thon from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 5 at the Animal Control located at 1060 Al Bishop Drive.  There will be K-9 demonstrations, raffles and special adoption rates.  Bring unopened and unexpired cat or dog food donations to help the community.

Oktoberfest to provide fun day for the family

Holy Trinity Lutheran Church at 2922 Sandy Plains Road will host Oktoberfest from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 5. Oktoberfest was created to provide the community with a safe inexpensive day of fun, food and fellowship. Construction Update Week of Sept. 28-Oct. 4

Shiloh Road at Shallowford Road Construction
Asphalt paving work will be performed this Saturday, Sept. 28 and Sunday, Sept. 29 on Shiloh Road Between Wade Green Road and Bells Ferry Road. EXPECT DELAYS

Shiloh/Shallowford Road from Wade Green Road to Canton Road – Monday, Sept. 30 through Friday, Oct. 4
Expect periodic lane closures from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. with one lane open while the contractor continues grading, installing storm drainage crossings, asphalt paving and utilities relocating services. EXPECT DELAYS


New Chastain Road Westbound Bridge Replacement
The replacement of the westbound bridge on New Chastain Road over Noonday Creek will result in closing the westbound lanes for four months, or longer, beginning this summer. Westbound traffic will be detoured to the eastbound bridge, which will provide one lane in each direction during construction.

The contractor is not planning to work this weekend, Sept. 28-29.

New Chastain Road over Noonday Creek – Monday, Sept. 30 through Friday, Oct. 4
Contractor will be shifting one lane of traffic onto the new westbound bridge providing one lane on each bridge. Work will continue on the roadway approaches including grading, placing curb and installing guardrail. EXPECT DELAYS


Shallowford Road Sidewalk Construction
The contractor is not planning to work this weekend, Sept. 28-29.

Tanbark Place to Blackwell Road - Monday, Sept. 30 through Friday, Oct. 4
Contractor will continue water line, storm drainage, and placing concrete curb and sidewalk.


Steinhauer Road at Rocky Mountain Road Sidewalks
The contractor is not planning to work this weekend, Sept. 28-29.

Shallowford Road to Rocky Mountain Road - Monday, Sept. 30 through Friday, Oct. 4
Project is substantially complete. Contractor will be working on punchlist items including final striping and grassing.


Old Sewell Road Sidewalks Construction

The contractor is not planning to work this weekend, Sept. 28-29.

Holt Road to Old Canton Road - Monday
, Sept. 30 through Friday,
Oct. 4

Contractor will continue wall construction and installing water main. Utilities will be relocating services.


Road Resurfacing**
Asphalt paving operations - which include lane closures though one lane will remain open at all times - are **scheduled next week, (Monday, Sept. 30 through Friday, Oct. 4), on the following road: EXPECT DELAYS

Kurtz Road from Bells Ferry Road to Canton Road

Canton Road Bridge construction
Canton Road between Sawyer Road and the ramp to Cobb Parkway is now closed and is scheduled to reopen at the beginning of October.

The closure is to replace the Canton Road bridge and also the rail road bridge over U.S.41 / SR 3. This project will also realign Industrial Park Drive and Elizabeth Street to make intersection improvements.

Skip Spann Connector (Busbee-Frey Connector)
This proposed project is a new bridge over Interstate 75 that connects Frey Road to Busbee Drive just north of Chastain Road. A roundabout is proposed at the intersection of the Skip Spann Connector and Busbee Drive. For more, visit http://tinyurl.com/d6fuhbj
