WCC general secretary honoured with Royal Jordanian award

The World Council of Churches (WCC) general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit has received the Al-Hussein Decoration for Distinguished Service award, presented to him by King Abdullah II of Jordan. Tveit expressed gratitude for this acknowledgement of his contributions to interfaith dialogue and the WCC’s work in promoting peaceful relations between Christians and Muslims.

Tveit received this award in a ceremony on 3 September in Amman, Jordan, where he was participating in a conference on “Challenges facing Arab Christians” along with other Christian and Muslim leaders from around the world.

The Al-Hussein Decoration for Distinguished Service, First Class, recognizes achievements in particular fields, including philanthropy, literature, the arts, science, scholarship and education, industry and commerce, or public service.

“The medal given to me, with other religious leaders, by King Abdullah II is indeed a great honour and inspiration,” said Tveit.

“Inter-religious work for peace-building in communities around the world is a major priority for the churches, and it is my prayer to promote these initiatives in every way I can,” he added.

The World Council of Churches promotes Christian unity in faith, witness and service for a just and peaceful world. An ecumenical fellowship of churches founded in 1948, by the end of 2012 the WCC had 345 member churches representing more than 500 million Christians from Protestant, Orthodox, Anglican and other traditions in over 110 countries. The WCC works cooperatively with the Roman Catholic Church. The WCC general secretary is the Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit, from the [Lutheran] Church of Norway.
