Sept. 20, 2013 Time running out for Veterans education program
Redevelopment event draws public U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson was one of the key speakers at the “Rebuilding Cobb’s Future” event held Sept. 16 at the Marietta Conference Center. Officials and local leaders met to discuss redevelopment opportunities and options for the community. The event also sought to raise awareness of the impact of blighted properties and the need for their redevelopment as well as financial tools and incentives to make that happen.
Public hearing to discuss plans for battlefield park The public is invited to learn about the Chattahoochee River Line Battlefield in southeast Cobb County when the Mableton Improvement Coalition hosts the second in a series of public meetings 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 30, at Mt. Harmony Baptist Church, 561 Veterans Memorial Highway, Mableton. Using federal grant funds, MIC has commissioned a preservation plan for the battlefield, which runs from Mableton through Smyrna north to Vinings. The presentation will include concept plans for the Henderson Road and Discovery Boulevard tracts, recommendations for improvements and connectivity to Shoupade and River Line Parks, identification of additional parcels for acquisition and ideas for how the park can be interpreted and publicized. Cobb Community Garden Council Now Forming Community Garden coordinators and those affiliated with community garden management are invited to join a new council. The first quarterly meeting of the group will be held 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22, at the Cobb County Extension Service office, 678 South Cobb Drive, Suite 200, Marietta. This is not limited to vegetable gardens and can include gardens in the planning stages or already in operation. The council is a joint effort of the Master Gardener Volunteers of Cobb County and the Cobb County Extension Service. The main purpose is sharing ideas and information. The Veterans Retraining Assistance Program is seeking applicants who can qualify for an additional 12 months of Montgomery GI Bill benefits for training towards a high-demand occupation. The two year program, which began in 2011, can only accept applications until Sept. 30 and the last payment can be made through March 31, 2014. VRAP participants who do not enroll in school by March of this year will not be able to receive a full 12 months of training. Officials said there are an estimated 50,000 veterans who have been approved for eligibility, but have not started using their benefit. For more information about this program, go to 
Cobb County Animal Control will host an adopt-a-thon 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 5, at its shelter at 1060 Al Bishop Drive, Marietta. The event will feature special adoption rates. vendors, food, police K-9 demonstrations and prize raffles. The public is also invited to bring donations of unopened and unexpired dog food or cat food to help the community.
