The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality is working with schools and districts around the state to make the air cleaner for students on the ride to school. The TCEQ announced today that grant applications are now being accepted to fund retrofits to eligible diesel-powered school buses with emissions-reduction technology. This grant opportunity is open to all public and charter schools in Texas that operate one or more diesel-powered school buses.
A total of up to $3 million is available to reimburse school districts for installing pollution-control retrofits on older diesel school buses. Three different types of emissions-reduction technologies are approved.
While a school district may apply for any amount of funding, the TCEQ has limited funds and will review applications on a first-come, first-served basis. The deadline for application is Dec. 6.
More than 6,900 buses across the state have been retrofitted since the beginning of the Texas Clean School Bus Program in 2008.
