Week of Sept. 28-Oct. 4 Congratulations to Fair Oaks Elementary for National Blue Ribbon I would like to extend the warmest congratulations to the teachers, staff, students and parents of Fair Oaks Elementary School for recently being honored as a National Blue Ribbon School. Fair Oaks was recognized by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan in the category of "Exemplary Improving" schools. "We believe that every child has amazing potential," Principal Cindy Szwec said in a statement. "Our staff and community look for innovative ways to inspire our students to see the best in themselves and achieve beyond expectations." The "Exemplary Improving" category applies to schools that have at least 40 percent of their students from disadvantaged backgrounds and demonstrate the most progress in improving student achievement levels. During the past two school years, more than 90 percent of Fair Oaks students met standards on the reading and math sections of the CRCT. The elementary school is located at 407 Barber Road, Marietta. Meeting Monday will discuss preservation plan for historic battlefield Residents are invited to learn about the Chattahoochee River Line Battlefield in southeast Cobb when the Mableton Improvement Coalition hosts a public meeting 7 p.m., Monday, Sept. 30, at Mt. Harmony Baptist Church, 561 Veterans Memorial Highway, Mableton. Using federal grant funds, MIC has commissioned a preservation plan for the battlefield, which runs from Mableton through Smyrna north to Vinings. The presentation will include concept plans for the Henderson Road and Discovery Boulevard tracts, recommendations for improvements and connectivity to Shoupade and River Line Parks, identification of additional parcels for acquisition and ideas for how the park can be interpreted and publicized. Community Garden Council will help members share information Community garden coordinators or those affiliated with community garden management are invited to join a new council. A community garden can be loosely defined as “any piece of land gardened by a group of people” so this is not limited to vegetable gardens and can be gardens in the planning stages or already in operation. The first quarterly meeting of the group will be held 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 22, at the Cobb County Extension Service office, 678 South Cobb Drive, Suite 200, Marietta. The council is a joint effort of the Master Gardener Volunteers of Cobb County and the Cobb County Extension Service. The main purpose is sharing ideas and information. For more information please click here to see a brief video about community gardens and the council. If you are interested in joining or have additional questions please contact Cobb Community Garden Council Chair, Debbie Abernathy, at debbie@esmithair.com. Cupid Around Cobb • Enjoyed helping recognize Charles Switzer with several members of Cobb County Staff and elected officials in the renaming of the Central Library in his honor. Mr. Switzer has dedicated 30 years of time, energy, and service as an advocate, volunteer and friend of the Cobb Library System. • Joined the City of Austell in their first youth conservation field day held at the Terrell Garden and Educational Center. Austell Elementary's fifth grade students were actively engaged in several demonstrations held by various government agencies including Cobb's Soil and Water Conservation District, the Natural Resources Conservation Service, the Geogria Forestry Commission, and Keep Cobb Beautiful. A special thanks also to Lowe's off East-West Connector for your participation in creating a large pot planting for each group of fifth graders. • I held my sixth town hall meeting at Powder Spring's Ron Anderson Center. The meeting was attended by several Cobb County residents, City of Powder Springs elected officials including Mayor Pat Vaughn; City of Austell elected officials; and Cobb County staff. I appreciate the energy and interest of those who attended and the willingness of many of you to get involved in efforts to care for our community. • Attended South Cobb Rotary's 75th anninversary event to my misfortune and entertainment with two antsy toddlers in tow! Congratulations South Cobb Rotary on your accomplishment and to Rotary members for keeping the spirit of service beyond self alive in our community.
