This issue is dedicated to the memory of Dr Leo C Vining, Professor Emeritus of Dalhousie University. We would like to thank all the students, friends and colleagues from Dr Vining's long career as a researcher and teacher who contributed to this issue. We are also grateful to the co-organizers of this issue, Dr Nathan A Magarvey, Dr Arnold L Demain and Dr Gerald Wright, and thank them for their tremendous support with the planning of this issue.
