Help beautify Lake Allatoona during fun annual event

People are invited to enjoy a day of fresh air, fun, volunteerism and environmental education during the Great Allatoona Clean Up Saturday, Sept. 28. This annual community event helps maintain the beauty and health of Lake Allatoona. From 9 a.m. to noon, volunteers will pick up trash that has collected over the summer. Annually, the event draws more than 4,000 volunteers who cover 40 different areas around the 270-mile shoreline. In 2012, more than 5.29 tons of trash and 299 tires were removed from the shoreline.

A volunteer appreciation picnic will be held from noon to 2 p.m. at Riverside Day Use Park. Gates to the park will open at noon and badges distributed at clean-up sites will serve as entry tickets into the picnic. There will be music, games, giveaways and demonstrations by environmentally focused organizations. All volunteers must register to participate. Register at greatallatoonacleanup.org or myglac.org.

Date of town hall date in October changed

I would like to thank everyone who attended our town hall this week. This meetings are a wonderful opportunity to communicate directly with my constituents and share progress we are making around the district and county.

Our next District One town hall has been moved to Thursday, Oct. 10, (it was previously scheduled on Oct. 17). It will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at North Cobb Senior Center, 4100 Old Highway 41, Acworth. For more information, call 770-528-3313 or visit cobbcounty.org/goreham.

Community Garden Council will help members share information

Community garden coordinators or those affiliated with community garden management are invited to join this new group.  A community garden can be loosely defined as “any piece of land gardened by a group of people” so this is not limited to vegetable gardens and can be gardens in the planning stages or already in operation.

The first quarterly meeting of the group will be held 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 22, at the Cobb County Extension Service office, 678 South Cobb Drive, Suite 200, Marietta.
The council is a joint effort of the Master Gardener Volunteers of Cobb County and the Cobb County Extension Service. The main purpose is sharing ideas and information.

For more information please click here to see a brief video about community gardens and the council.  If you are interested in joining or have additional questions please contact Cobb Community Garden Council Chair, Debbie Abernathy, at debbie@esmithair.com

Fall Adopt-A-Thon at animal shelter will be a great family event

Cobb Animal Control staff will host its seventh Adopt-A-Thon 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 5. This event is part of continuing efforts to help find homes for the homeless animals of Cobb through public awareness and working closely with the community.

A variety of groups and organizations representing different aspects of responsible pet ownership and vendors will be at the shelter for the event. A K-9 officer will be on hand to demonstrate skills these dogs represent in the police force. Food vendors, raffle items and special adoption rates round out activities the public will enjoy during the fun and free family event.
