Week of Sept. 21-27 Crews hard at work to finish Barrett Parkway improvement project Wall construction continues on Old 41 Highway, as part of the Barrett Parkway project. All six lanes are open on Barrett Parkway, with final completion expected by the end of the year. Barrett Parkway Construction Barrett Parkway has three lanes of traffic open in each direction. The contractor is not planning to work this weekend, Sept. 21-22. Help beautify Lake Allatoona during fun annual event People are invited to enjoy a day of fresh air, fun, volunteerism and environmental education during the Great Allatoona Clean Up Saturday, Sept. 28. This annual community event helps maintain the beauty and health of Lake Allatoona. From 9 a.m. to noon, volunteers will pick up trash that has collected over the summer. Annually, the event draws more than 4,000 volunteers who cover 40 different areas around the 270-mile shoreline. In 2012, more than 5.29 tons of trash and 299 tires were removed from the shoreline. A volunteer appreciation picnic will be held from noon to 2 p.m. at Riverside Day Use Park. Gates to the park will open at noon and badges distributed at clean-up sites will serve as entry tickets into the picnic. There will be music, games, giveaways and demonstrations by environmentally focused organizations. All volunteers must register to participate. Register at greatallatoonacleanup.org or myglac.org. Get up-close views of emergency vehicles at fun family event Families can enjoy a fun and educational event for children of all ages at the Cobb County Touch a Truck 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 28, at Town Center Mall. Participants will be able to explore police cars, dump trucks, SWAT trucks, front end loaders, fire rescue trucks, television trucks, fire engines, military vehicles, heavy construction vehicles and a police helicopter. The cost is $5 per person, with a maximum of $20 per family. All proceeds will benefit the Cobb Safety Village, which is one of the most comprehensive safety training environment in the region where children and residents can gain safety knowledge through hands-on experiences. For more information on the event, call 770-852-3270. Date of town hall date in October changed I would like to thank everyone who attended our town hall this week. This meetings are a wonderful opportunity to communicate directly with my constituents and share progress we are making around the district and county. Our next District One town hall has been moved to Thursday, Oct. 10, (it was previously scheduled on Oct. 17). Community Garden Council will help members share information Community garden coordinators or those affiliated with community garden management are invited to join this new group. A community garden can be loosely defined as “any piece of land gardened by a group of people” so this is not limited to vegetable gardens and can be gardens in the planning stages or already in operation. The first quarterly meeting of the group will be held 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 22, at the Cobb County Extension Service office, 678 South Cobb Drive, Suite 200, Marietta. Fall Adopt-A-Thon at animal shelter will be a great family event Cobb Animal Control staff will host its seventh Adopt-A-Thon 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 5. This event is part of continuing efforts to help find homes for the homeless animals of Cobb through public awareness and working closely with the community. A variety of groups and organizations representing different aspects of responsible pet ownership and vendors will be at the shelter for the event. A K-9 officer will be on hand to demonstrate skills these dogs represent in the police force. Food vendors, raffle items and special adoption rates round out activities the public will enjoy during the fun and free family event.
