HeLa cell line genome data published

 
 
 

Francis Collins, director of the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), has brokered a deal with the family of Henrietta Lacks to publish genome data from the HeLa cell line. The cell line has contributed to the development of a polio vaccine, the discovery of human telo­merase and countless other advances but were used without Lacks' knowledge or permission. An earlier paper caused a bioethical storm. Collins discuss how the NIH worked with the Lacks family in a Q&A with Nature, and reveals more details of the agreement in a Comment piece with Kathy L.
