| | Genetics: The next legacy of Henrietta Lacks In a Comment piece in this week’s Nature, Kathy Hudson and Francis Collins discuss how and why the National Institutes of Health (NIH) worked with the family of Henrietta Lacks to forge a new agreement for controlled access to whole genome data on the HeLa cell-line. “Her story is catalyzing enduring changes in policy that should afford future generations of research participants the protections and respect that were not in place during her lifetime,” the authors write. In a related Nature News article, Ewan Callaway, through interviews with the Lacks family, Collins and others, tells the story of how the agreement came together. In the same issue of Nature, a research paper reports the high-resolution genome sequence of the CCL-2 HeLa cancer cell line. Read the Comment article and view the related News feature online. | |
