Free safety class for seniors upcoming at Cobb Safety Village

Seniors ages 55 and older and one more chance to participate in free Senior Safety Awareness classes being held at the Cobb Safety Village this summer. The class will be held 10 a.m.-noon, Tuesday, July 30. Registration required by calling 770-852-3270. The Safety Village is located at 1220 Al Bishop Drive, Marietta.


Celebrate the joys of reading at free family event

The whole family is invited to enjoy the End of Summer Reading Celebration 5-7 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 3, at the Central Library.

More than 1,000 people attended this fun event last year and this year's celebration is pirate-themed. There will be games, crafts, live music, dancing, facepainting and story telling.

The event will be decked out with a huge pirate ship, palm trees, seashells, blue crabs, caves and the atmosphere of the high seas and tropical beaches. It is free and open to the public.

Public meeting to discuss alcohol license

The Shell gas station at the intersection of Six Flags Drive and Blairs Bridge Road has requested an alcohol license. A significant number of residents have expressed support and opposition. Commissioner Lisa Cupid will hold a public meeting to obtain community feedback 7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 8, at the South Cobb Recreation Center, 875 Six Flags Drive, Austell. Please attend and encourage others to so as well.


Final free family movie screening upcoming at Mable House

Families can enjoy the MOOVIES at the Mable finale with a screening of '"Hotel Transylvania" Thursday, Aug. 1. Even monsters need a vacation and Dracula operates a high-end resort away from the human world. He goes into overprotective mode when a boy discovers the resort and falls for the count's teenage daughter.

This event is free and open to the public. Gates will open at 7:30 p.m. and the movie will begin at dusk, around 8:30 p.m. Mable House is located at 5239 Floyd Road, Mableton. For more information, visit www.mablehouse.org or call 770-819-7765.

Upcoming health fair to offer free health screenings

U.S. Congressman David Scott will hold his Ninth Annual 13th Congressional District Health Fair featuring free vital health screenings and information by the region’s leading healthcare providers and organizations.

Health screenings include prostate cancer PSA screenings; clinical breast cancer exams; HIV/ AIDS screenings; diabetes screenings (glucose); blood pressure screenings; asthma screenings; cholesterol screenings; mental health screenings; sickle cell screenings; vision and dental screenings.

Please let us know when you have submitted a completed packet so we can arrange a time for you to come in and complete the process with the Human Resources Department.

Floyd Road Construction

The contractor is planning to work Saturday, July 27, placing concrete driveways with lane closures in the northbound lanes.

The contractor is not planning to work Sunday, July 28.

Clay Road to Hicks Road – Monday, July 29, through Friday, Aug. 2
Expect periodic lane closures 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. with one lane remaining while the contractor continues installing curb and gutter, sidewalks and grading. Utility companies will be relocating services. EXPECT DELAYS.

Pedestrian Access
Temporary sidewalks are in place to assist pedestrians while old sidewalks are removed and new sidewalks are constructed along the east side of Floyd Road. Additional traffic barrels and directional signage are in place to assist pedestrians needing access to existing bus stops on the west side of Floyd. All existing bus stops will be maintained during construction. Pedestrian paths may be temporarily relocated during short-duration closures as construction continues. When needed, contractors may escort pedestrians through the work zone.

Hopkins Road Bridge Replacement

Hopkins Road at Wildhorse Creek Bridge will open to traffic Monday, July 29.

Contractor will place roadway striping, new signs and lay sod.

Church Street (Mableton Elementary) Sidewalk Construction

The contractor is planning to work Saturday, July 27, performing grading operations and placing sod.

The contractor is not planning to work Sunday, July 28.

Church Street at Mableton Elementary – Monday, July 29, through Friday, Aug. 2
Expect intermittent lane closures 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. with one lane remaining open while the contractor continues placing concrete sidewalk, final grading, grassing and utility relocations.

The contractor is not planning to work this weekend, July 27-28.

Silver Comet Trail to Anderson Mill Road – Monday, July 29, through Friday, Aug. 2
The contractor will continue installing water main, begin installing storn drainage and utility relocations.
