New project will provide congestion relief around Chastain Road

The Town Center Area Community Improvement District will host a groundbreaking ceremony for the Skip Spann Connector 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, at 740 TownPark Lane, Kennesaw. This $17 million project has gone from the idea phase to groundbreaking in record time. The Skip Spann Connector will be a new bridge over Interstate 75 north of Chastain Road, from Frey Road to Busbee Drive, that provides direct access from Kennesaw State University to the Town Center economic activity center.

The project will provide:
• Congestion relief and improved access at the Chastain Road and I-75 interchange, including a 19 percent reduction in daily traffic.
• Improved access from KSU to the northwest corridor managed lanes access ramps at Big Shanty and the Cobb Community Transit park and ride lots.
• Pedestrian and bicycle access between the KSU campus and stadium.

Public hearing to discuss plans for battlefield park

The public is invited to learn about the Chattahoochee River Line Battlefield in southeast Cobb County when the Mableton Improvement Coalition hosts a public meeting 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 30, at Mt. Harmony Baptist Church, 561 Veterans Memorial Highway, Mableton. Using federal grant funds, MIC has commissioned a preservation plan for the battlefield, which runs from Mableton through Smyrna north to Vinings. The presentation will include concept plans for the Henderson Road and Discovery Boulevard tracts, recommendations for improvements and connectivity to Shoupade and River Line Parks, identification of additional parcels for acquisition and ideas for how the park can be interpreted and publicized. Book sale returns, volunteers wanted

The fall book sale will be held Oct. 11-13 at Jim Miller Park, 2245 Callaway Road, Marietta. Hours for the sale will be 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Friday and Saturday and 1-5 p.m., Sunday. Materials for sale will include books for all ages in both hardcover and paperback, DVD's, books on CD and audiocassette and magazines. Prices will range from 10 cents to $5. All profits from the sale go directly to buy more items for the 16 libraries in the Cobb Public Library System. Parking is free and both cash and checks will be accepted. Cobb County adopt-a-thon coming up for animal lovers

Cobb County Animal Control will host an adopt-a-thon 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 5, at its shelter at 1060 Al Bishop Drive, Marietta. The event will feature special adoption rates. vendors, food, police K-9 demonstrations and prize raffles. The public is also invited to bring donations of unopened and unexpired dog food or cat food to help the community. Cobb Community Garden Council Now Forming

Community garden coordinators and those affiliated with community garden management are invited to join a new council. The first quarterly meeting of the group will be held 6-8 p.m.  Tuesday, Oct. 22, at the Cobb County Extension Service office, 678 South Cobb Drive, Suite 200, Marietta. This is not limited to vegetable gardens and can  include gardens in the planning stages or already in operation.  The council is a joint effort of the Master Gardener Volunteers of Cobb County and the Cobb County Extension Service. The main purpose is sharing ideas and information. Crews 1 and 2 will complete District 1 this week and move to District 3.  Crew 3 will move into District 2.

Upon completion of shoulder mowing, all crews, accompanied by weed eating crews, will be dispersed in Districts 1, 3 and 4.
