The 13th annual Cobb County 5K to benefit Make-A-Wish Georgia will be held Saturday, Oct. 5, on the Marietta Square. The race helps grant wishes for local children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich their lives with hope, strength and joy. All net proceeds go to Make-A-Wish Georgia. Since 2001, more than $376,000 has been raised, helping grant the wishes of 65 local children.

Club dedicates replica of iconic landmark at Safety Village

The Kiwanis Club of Marietta showed its commitment to safety education for our children and community by sponsoring a replica of the iconic Kennesaw Mountain at the Cobb County Safety Village. The 40-foot by 80-foot replica is the latest addition to the village, which offers many interactive educational lessons that give students opportunities to learn hands-on. The Kiwanis Club's main emphasis is children, so this was an excellent partnership opportunity.

Volunteers needed for the Great Allatoona Clean Up Saturday

People are invited to enjoy a day of fresh air, fun, volunteerism and environmental education during the Great Allatoona Clean Up Saturday, Sept. 28. This annual community event helps maintain the beauty and health of Lake Allatoona. From 9 a.m. to noon, volunteers will pick up trash that has collected over the summer. Annually, the event draws more than 4,000 volunteers who cover 40 different areas around the 270-mile shoreline. In 2012, more than 5.29 tons of trash and 299 tires were removed from the shoreline.

A volunteer appreciation picnic will be held from noon to 2 p.m. at Riverside Day Use Park. Gates to the park will open at noon and badges distributed at clean-up sites will serve as entry tickets into the picnic. There will be music, games, giveaways and demonstrations by environmentally focused organizations. All volunteers must register to participate. Garden Council will help members share information

Community garden coordinators or those affiliated with community garden management are invited to join a new council. A community garden can be loosely defined as “any piece of land gardened by a group of people” so this is not just limited to vegetable gardens. They can be gardens in the planning stages or already in operation. The first quarterly meeting of the group will be held 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 22, at the Cobb County Extension Service office, 678 South Cobb Drive, Suite 200, Marietta.

The council is a joint effort of the Master Gardener Volunteers of Cobb County and the Cobb County Extension Service and the main objective is sharing ideas and information. For more information please click here to see a brief video about community gardens and the council.  If you are interested in joining or have additional questions please contact Cobb Community Garden Council Chair, Debbie Abernathy, at debbie@esmithair.com
