Dallas – The Dallas Public Library has issued a call for entries for the 18th annual Express Yourself! Youth Poetry Competition which will continue through Jan. 19, 2014. Students in grades 2 to 12 who live in or attend school in Dallas are eligible to submit their original poetry.

“We love to give the young people of Dallas this platform to encourage their self-expression,” said Director of Libraries Jo Giudice. “Every year we are awed by the creativity in the submissions we receive.”

Finalists will be honored at a ceremony at the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library, 1515 Young St. on April 26, 2014 and their poems will be published in the 18th edition of the Express Yourself! Poetry Competition Anthology.

Students whose talents lean toward the visual are also invited to draw or paint a cover for the anthology that reflects the title of the poetry competition. The winner’s artwork will be on the front cover while four finalists will have their artwork featured on the back cover. To enter and for complete competition guidelines visit www.dallaslibrary2.org/childrensCenter/youthPoetryContest/index.php.

The annual poetry competition is funded in part by the Joe M. and Doris Russell Dealey Fund of The Dallas Foundation, Dallas Public Library, and Friends of the Dallas Public Library.

The Dallas Public Library operates the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library, 28 branch locations, and two bookmobiles. A library card is free for any Dallas resident. For information on the many free programs and services available at the Dallas Public Library visit www.dallaslibrary.org.
