WILD TAIGA

Finland's wild taiga is one of the few areas in Europe where it is possible to photograph rare, majestic beasts in their natural environment. In addition to carnivores such as brown bears, wolves and wolverines, you can see moose, wild forest reindeer, flying squirrels, beavers and our biggest birds of prey. And thanks to the midnight sun, you can watch wildlife around the clock!

The Nature Trackers Handbook

Nick Baker (Really Wild Show, Weird Creatures, Springwatch, Bug Book) is trying to lure people outdoors by explaining, and helping them spot, many of the things going on around them in the natural world. He makes a pretty good fist of it too.

New bird species discovered in the Peruvian Andes

A graduate student at the University of Kansas (KU) has discovered a new bird species, the Junin Tapaculo, in the remote Andes Mountains of central Peru.

Following sightings by birders and leads from fellow ornithologists, Peter Hosner, a doctoral student of ecology and evolutionary focused his fieldwork in Junin, a department in central Peru scarcely surveyed by ornithologists.

"We found the Junin Tapaculo in the field by its distinctive voice," Hosner said. "I'd spent a lot of time traveling and working with birds in the Andes previously, and I had never heard anything like it before."

Dispelling misconceptions - The hunting argument

The trophy hunting industry's dismissal of its opponents as ‘animal rightists' is just one of several misconceptions that do it no favours, says Ian Michler. It should perhaps be taking a more reasoned look at hunting in Africa and the growing opposition to it.

Last year a leading spokesperson for the trophy hunting industry in South Africa attempted to defend its poor image by blaming ‘fringe elements' and ‘animal rightist elements' for peddling ‘misconceptions' about hunting. His tone towards animal rightists and opponents in general was disparaging and he went on to say that they ‘play on emotion' and suggested that ‘a lot could be done to educate the urban public to the reality of hunting'.

Botswana - going soon

I (Powell Ettinger, the editor) haven't been to Botswana before, but I am heading there in 2 weeks with my family. We are doing a mix of catered camping, and self-drive in and around Moremi & the Okavango, with some time also in Chobe and on the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans.

Much of the trip will be a self-drive adventure organised by 'Self Drive Southern Africa'.

We have booked (and paid) for a trip from Maun to Victoria Falls via Moremi, Savuti & Chobe.

My plan is to post updates via Facebook & Twitter as and when I can get a signal, so hopefully not very often.

Any tips welcome - Editor@wildlifeextra.com
