MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR

WongaHow hard do you think about what your money supports?

The Archbishop of Canterbury put ethics and money on the table in some style, when he set the Church of England against payday lender Wonga.

Murphy's Law then delivered the Most Rev Justin Welby more headlines when it was revealed the Church's own pension fund had managed to indirectly invest in Wonga.

That led to the question of can you really invest ethically?

The answer is a grey area. You need to define where your good and bad line sits. Are oil firms out? Tobacco might be a no, but what about booze?

Do you restrict yourself to ethical funds? Thus limiting investments and potentially your returns. Do you fund or pick shares in a business you agree with, or is that too many eggs in one basket?

Picking an investment is often enough to make people's heads spin, without even worrying about any of this. Add it in and it looks beyond complicated.

But there are less complicated ways to put your money to work for good. It can be as simple as putting some savings in a credit union, or choosing your local building society over a big bank.

Ultimately, that might mean accepting lower returns. What price would you put on making a difference?
