Millage rate to be reduced, free family friendly events and other news

Week of July 15, 2013

Millage meetings canceled; millage rate to be reduced

Because of the Cobb Board of Commissioners' plan to reduce the millage rate, two advertised millage meetings on July 16 have been canceled. At the Tuesday, July 23, commission meeting, Chairman Tim Lee will propose a decrease in the county millage rate. The rate determines how much a property owner pays in annual property taxes. This millage decrease is the first step in a five year commitment to reduce property taxes. The reduction is possible because the local economy continues to improve and tight spending controls within the county budget. The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the BOC Room on the second floor of 100 Cherokee Street, Marietta.

Last year, the event featured a many organizations speaking on safety, health and responsible pet ownership.

During this year’s expanded event, parents and children can meet ferret and reptile rescues, discover the importance of vet visits and learn how a dog can become a therapy animal.

Attendees can also meet a trainer who will demonstrate agility exercises, find out why cats make great pets for some families and understand how some dogs become more than just pets to diabetic patients.
