84-inch pipeline update - White Rock Lake

84-inch pipeline update - 2800 White Rock

Dallas Water Utilities (DWU) personnel completed the repairs and returned the 84-inch pipeline to service on July 3, 2013.

DWU reopened the 2800-2900 blocks of Whiterock Road and W. Lawther to traffic.

For the next few weeks, DWU will be engaged with pavement replacement activities along Whiterock as well as restoring the area to its original condition.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

Water Main Breaks - Summer

The City of Dallas Water Utilities operates and maintains approximately 4,922 linear miles of water mains, with a service area of 699 square miles.  During the months of June, July and August, the average number of water main breaks and leaks throughout the city is 6 per day.  Most of these water main failures are attributed to sudden pressure changes in the distribution system as a result of rapidly changing water demands.

When extremely hot and dry weather invades Dallas, however, the number of broken water mains/leaks increases as a result of external forces exerted on the pipelines from soil expansion and contraction.  During a severe weather event, such as extremely hot and dry weather, the number of water mains breaks can increase.

Other factors such as corrosion, changes in system pressure and water hammer can play a role in water main failures. The number of water main breaks has not appreciably increased.  Currently, we are repairing approximately 4 breaks/leaks per day.

DWU has an aggressive pipeline replacement plan that has replaced nearly 300 miles of water pipe over the last five years.

DWU has repair crews around the clock to enable it to respond quickly to any water main breaks should they occur.
